Collaborations Workshop 2023

CW23 took place as a hybrid event from Tuesday, 2 May to Thursday, 4 May 2023. The theme of the workshop was Sustainable Career Development for those in the research software community: looking after your software, your career, and yourself.

The Software Sustainability Institute’s Collaborations Workshop series brings together researchers, developers, innovators, managers, funders, publishers, policymakers, leaders and educators to explore best practices and the future of research software. Collaborations Workshop 2023 (CW23) took place as a hybrid event in Manchester, UK from Tuesday 2 May - Thursday 4 May 2023.

The theme of CW23 was Sustainable Career Development for those in the research software community: looking after your software, your career, and yourself. The theme encompasses

  • Technical development: including software sustainability, software products and digital tools, infrastructure and documentation, software development skills, and training.
  • Career development: including career pathways related to research software, how to get credit for your work, mentorship, and inclusive leadership to support teamwork.
  • Personal development: including sustaining your mental health, well-being and finding community.

Venue and Accessibility

CW23 will take place as a hybrid event from Manchester, UK.

If you are attending the event in-person, please find more information about the venue, location, accessibility, accommodation, and travel here.

Hybrid participation will be facilitated using Zoom. All participants - both remote and in-person - will need to install their client, and make sure that it is updated to the latest version.

Transcription and captioning will be provided using Zoom and Otter.ai.

A CW23 Slack workspace will be available for participants to connect, engage in discussion, ask questions, and forge new collaborations. These conversations can persist long after the Zoom room has closed. The invitation link will be emailed to participants via the email they registered with.

We will be using Google Documents for collaborative note-taking and keeping everyone synchronised during CW23. The links to these documents will be shared with participants closer to the event.

We recommend that remote participants join with a good quality headset with microphone, plenty of screen space (either using a large monitor or second screen), a normally reliable WiFi signal or wired connection, and a quiet room where you are less likely to be disturbed (but we understand this might be difficult).

In-person participants should bring a laptop and a good quality headset with microphone. Remember, this is a hybrid event and you will still be interacting with other participants virtually.
